OK so why do it?? Because this band still has an awful lot to say! Indeed VoicePrint Records thought so, signing the band to their label. Better Late Than Never is the first of two new albums and there is also a live DVD to come.
If you think that hard driving unpretentious fun loving rock was a thing of the past then think again and read on…..
Barrie Masters has in the latest Hot Rod line up, arguably the best musicians in the long turbulent history of Eddie and the Hot Rods. Two new guitarists, Richard Holgarth and recently Chris Taylor, compliment Simon Bowley (drums) and Dipster (bass). An injection of adrenalin (as if it was needed) from the new boys has raised the Hot Rods to new levels of drive and excitement.
Before you play this album get prepared to rock. Warn the neighbours (they may want to listen), Krannngkup the volume on your sound system and press play. Incidentally if you’re an armchair listener, fix a seatbelt, otherwise you may find yourself hopping around your lounge like a frog in a blender.
The first bars of the intro of Bad Time Again kick out the message of this CD – we’re gonna rock you, get ready for a white knuckle ride….then bang in come the drums and bass…(hope you haven’t blown your speakers) a torrent of sound spews forth. But this is not inane head bangin rock there is rhythm and melody, Masters voice kicks in and breathes life into the lyrics – Bad Time Again…yeah but ya must have had loads a fun getting there.
Need Your Touch follows, the band driving on, guitar interplay weaves its way through the number. Ain,t No 9 to 5 tells us to make the most of life– fancy a night out on the town with these guys – keep listening. The journey through life’s trials and tribulations continues, fast living, fast cars and loose wimmen. Deep Blue Interceptor tells the tale of a ménage a trios between a man his woman and his car, guess who wins !! – Oh no bad time again.
A masterful surprise is, Not Enough - a rock ballad from Barry Masters, surely not, but then there is only one Barrie Masters, his vocals heighten the dynamics of the song holding back the Hot Rods for some real sensitive playing. Not for long though, next track Bad Man blows away any remaining cobwebs. The album winds up strongly with an old (but never recorded favourite) Once Bitten, Twice Shy and High Society.
Right through Better Late Than Never the guitars slug it out with the bass and drums, Masters takes a ringside seat and occasionally urges the combatants to “C’mon,…C’mon”. By the time you get to round twelve you realise there is never going to be a winner and a re match will have to take place.
Two live bonus tracks have been added Woolly Bully and Hard Driving Man, these would make any party swing, the Hot Rods rock em out with ease.
Eddie and the Hot Rods are back as recording artists. Many of these tracks are already part of their live set and will become firm favourites with audiences. If there are any budding rock bands out there then be prepared for a lesson in entertainment, if you wanna take em on live, then be prepared for an ass kickin.
One final point! Better Late Than Never should come with a warning for those who intend playing whilst driving:
Better Late Than Never can seriously damage your wealth, 0 – 12 penalty points in one easy listening no matter what f***in engine your vehicle is fitted with.
