Imagine you have had a night on the town with Barrie Masters the Hot Rods vocalist. It’s been a good night you’ve drunk/smoked one or two too many and you are about to head home when Masters comes up with what at the time seems like a stunning idea!
Masters explains that his mates in the band have pooled their resources and are building some kind of Hot Rod sports car, it’s nearly finished so why don’t we take it for a maiden test drive? Magic !!!
Before you know it you’re sitting in the passenger seat, Masters is at the wheel and he’s explaining that if he hadn’t got into rock music Michael Schumacher would have been looking up his dust pipe for most of the last ten years.
The car looks OK from the outside not too outrageous actually, Masters hotwires the machine and it howls into life. Then you realise this Hot Rod has got some great race tuned engine under the bonnet, the management system must have been chipped with a trillion gigabyte processor and its pumping enough high octane rocket fuel to cause a national oil shortage and the gearbox must have come from a Ferrari! This highly tuned machine truly reflects the band’s onstage performance.
On the motorway now, the Hot Rod running like a dream, rock hard suspension. You give Masters a sideways look, he is now wearing a manic expression, a crazy grin adorns his face and he’s opening up the throttle, “C,mon,C,mon” he yells at the power train, the Hot Rod’s screaming out of control…..oh shit he’s gonna kill us !!!
Wait a mo there’s a DVD player in the cockpit – Click – It’s Eddie & The Hot Rods live DVD filmed at the Mean Fiddler in 2005. Wow excellent film definition.
Hot Rod opening track, Teenage Depression…if you don’t know what I mean then you’d better look out, look out. Oh no! Nightmare for the common man!
Eyes transfixed to the screen, next track The Kids Are Alright, I hope so there’s a madman driving this Hot Rod. After that blasts Better Without You the first of several tracks from the excellent Better Late than Never album.
The miles hurtle by, “What kinda flying machine is this Barrie?”
“A Deep Blue Interceptor mate and its mine, Lets Quit this Town, stop hangin around.”
“Barrie I wanna get out, but this DVD’s got me transfixed.”
“Just look at the close up shots of the band they’re fantastic besides I need Your Touch”
“Why? Don’t you know you have the power to Do Anything You Want To Do?”
“Yup but it’s no good without Love, Love, Love”
“Maybe but stop philosophising and watch the road, you’re putting your Life On The Line.
“I don’t give a s**t mate”
Oh no Bad Time Again, only one thing for it, humour him. I yell at him over the screaming engine noise “I see you’ve got the Human Touch”
“Yeah and with this Hot Rod power train behind me I’ve also got The Power And The Glory, just look at me go mate; I’m A Hard Driving Man”.
By now the film crew are well into their task of showcasing this brilliant live performance, the edits have become more frequent and extreme bringing the riotous activity onstage into sharp focus for the viewer.
“Barrie, where are we goin?”
“To see an old flame of mine – Gloria”
“Gloria?”
“Yeah G - L - O - R - I - A . Only one slight problem”
“What’s that?”
“You know I said this Hot Rod was nearly complete”
“Yup”
“Well they forgot to fit the disc brakes”
“How the **** we gonna stop?”
No answer, Barrie drops the Hot Rod into 2nd gear at something like 20,000 revs, the engine howls, gearbox screams. He hauls on the handbrake, the machine protests, squealing, spinning, burning rubber and oil, bits of Hot Rod flying about the place. “Ang on” he shouts, “We’re gonna stop right here”. Holy smoke I think we’re gonna make it! We shudder to a halt.
Phew. I climb out of the wreckage having just watched a great live DVD I must get a copy, no self respecting rock aficionado would have a music collection without it – fantastic, was it just a dream? A tap on my shoulder, I look around – there’s Masters, grinning….”Wanna play again”?
Dave "Chilli" Palmer.
